Resurfacing vs. Replacing Your Rotors

Brake rotors are a vital brake system components that require Scheduled Maintenance as outlined in the owner’s manual. It is also possible for brake rotors to get excessive wear, cracks, or grooves that limit how they create resistance and stopping power alongside brake pads. Powerful braking at factory specifications relies on maximum surface area contact between the flat face of the brake pads and a flat rotor face. When the rotors get cracking or grooving on the flat surface, they will need to be resurfaced with a specialized machine that removes a small plane of metal to remove those defects and restore a perfectly flat rotor face. However, if the rotors have excessively deep cracks, grooves, or any warping, the rotors require replacement because resurfacing would be ineffective in terms of restoring factory specifications.

Symptoms of a Brake Rotor Problems

Brake rotors face intense friction and heat while generating stopping power against the brake pads. The intensity of this job will eventually cause wear & tear with some driving factors causing faster wear with damages possible if the wear goes unattended.

  • Noisy brakes
  • Brakes causing excessive vibrations or shaking
  • Rotors have grooves or score marks
  • Vehicle needs more distance to stop

Extend the Life of your Rotors

We know from our experience maintaining rotors that some driving factors cause the rotors to wear faster. Here are a few tips to consider if you are interested in modifying your driving style to extend rotor life:

  • Don’t drive using the two-foot approach
  • Stop using a greater distance including coasting
  • Remove excessive cargo that adds weight to the vehicle
  • Flush the brake fluid routinely
  • Refrain from riding the brakes
  • Refrain from aggressive driving styles that cause hard stopping
